HR Leaders: Support Your Own Well-being

Things to Do in San Diego and NYC in March 2017

Next month, HR leaders will convene in San Diego and New York City to discuss the challenges presented by the complex world of healthcare. Benefits administrators, total rewards leaders, compensation experts and other HR professionals will share strategies for delivering more value from employer-sponsored healthcare programs -- to both employers and employees.

The Conference Board's 17th Annual Employee Health Care Conference, to be held in San Diego (3/9-10) and New York City (3/16-17), promises to be an intense and rewarding event for attendees, especially as HR plays an increasingly strategic role in the business.

If you're among those attending, consider taking some time out for yourself while in one of these destination cities - tacking on a few days of R&R around the event or squeezing in some personal time between conference sessions.

Here are some ideas to support your own health and well-being:

Things to Do in March in San Diego

📷Stretch your legs: After a few days of sitting in a chair, put your body to the test by running in San Diego's half marathon or 5K and seeing the city's spectacular beauty. The event will be held on Sunday, March 12. Register here: http://sdhalfmarathon.com/.

📷Share a laugh. We all need a laugh now and then, so why not share a good one with this cute creature at the San Diego Zoo?

“Known as the bushman's alarm clock, a laughing kookaburra vocalizes in its family group at dawn and dusk. The loud call sounds like a variety of trills, chortles, belly laughs, and hoots. It starts and ends with a low chuckle and has a shrieking "laugh" in the middle.”

Shop till you Drop. Looking for a truly original gift to bring back to family? You might find it at Seaport Village, home to a wide range of unique shops. Travel back in time at American Nostalgia, featuring Coca-Cola, Harley-Davidson, Marilyn Monroe, Route 66 and other memorabilia and originals. Or maybe you're a flag flyer. If so, Alamo Flags might have the flag for you: NFL, Auto Racing, Military, State, County, etc. Or try your and at magic. The Seaport Village Magic Shop is “is packed with the magic tricks, unique card decks, the most outrageous gag gifts, novelties and most of all, laughing shoppers and magic enthusiasts.”

Get bedazzled by a Busker. The Seaport Village Busker Festival is happening on March 4 - 5, Noon to 6pm, and it's free. Some of the country's top performers will delight you with their talents “from sword swallowing to knife throwing to pogo stick tricks and juggling on unicycles.”

Get groovy at CRSSD Festival 2017, March 4 - 5, beginning at Noon. This year's music and dance festival features a fantastic line-up, including: Flume, Duke Dumont, Blood Orange, Bob Moses, Alunageorge, Snakehips, Dusky, Justin Martin, 2manydjs, Lane 8, Jackmaster, Seth Troxler, Eats Everything, Âme, Recondite, Damian Lazarus, Tensnake, Josh Wink, Midland, Skream, Horse Meat Disco, Cut Snake, Darius, and many, many others. 21 and older.

Get away from it all. Be the astronaut at the San Diego Air and Space Museum. Launched in February 2017, “Be the Astronaut is a fun, interactive adventure where you are in control as you launch a rocket, pilot a spaceship, and drive a rover in space.”

Things to do in March in New York City

📷Get a jump on spring. Soak in the colors of vibrant orchids while sipping a cocktail at the Orchid Show at the New York Botanical Garden (Bronx, NY), Saturday, March 18, 6:30 - 9:30pm. “The Orchid Show celebrates its 15th year at The New York Botanical Garden with an homage to the wealth of orchids and rich cultural history of Thailand.” See Orchid Evenings.

Feast on new films from new directors. The Museum of Modern Art celebrates its 46th edition of the New Directors/New Films festival, introducing audiences “to the work of emerging filmmakers from around the world. Presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and The Museum of Modern Art. Tickets go on sale Thursday, March 2.

Be astonished: get your tix to the Drone Film Festival, fast. The New York City Drone Film Festival, March 17-19, 2017, screens short films shot using a drone and holds interactive panels and seminars. This event is likely to sell out again. "What's so cool about the New York City Drone Film Festival is that it culls the best of that brilliance, and presents to the world the best of the best. I thought I'd seen it all—I was wrong." - David Pogue, Founder, Yahoo Tech

Rock to Eric Clapton, Madison Square Garden, Sunday, March 19; Monday, March 20. “Considering he's the only three-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, buying Eric Clapton tickets will truly put you in the presence of a living legend, so come rock out to the inimitable tones of this guitar juggernaut as he rips all of his timeless riffs live on the Eric Clapton tour.”

📷No football, no baseball - catch some hockey instead! The New York Rangers just happen to be playing at Madison Square Garden on March 17 - against the Florida Panthers. Get your tix and watch two NHL playoff contenders go to battle. You might get lucky and see goalie legend Henrik Lundquist!

A few options to consider as you plan your travel, but whatever you decide, Accolade looks forward to seeing you next month at The Conference Board in San Diego and NYC.
