3 ways to bring healthcare equity to a diverse workforce

September 21, 2023 | 1 min read

Marginalized populations face healthcare disparities, which can lead to greater occurrences of mistreatment and misdiagnosis. One-size-fits-all doesn’t work, especially when you’ve cultivated a diverse workplace. Here’s how you as an HR professional can help bring equity to your employees’ healthcare experiences.

  1. Provide access to specialists: Offer employees an Expert Medical Opinion benefit. This will give every person—no matter where they live—access to top healthcare experts when making healthcare decisions. It will also ensure that employees understand their treatment and care options.

  2. Explore cost-sharing alternatives: Work with your chief financial officer to find new methods for employee healthcare cost-sharing. This may allow you to slightly increase premiums as a percentage of pay for high tiers and reduce them for the lowest tiers, creating affordable care options for all employees.

  3. Collect meaningful data: The best way to know what your employees need is to talk with them. An open-door policy can allow employees to feel heard and cared for. You also can capture demographic and social determinants of health information about your employees. Then, you can use this combined data to assess your equity efforts.
